Department of Physics of IPB University Discuss the Possible Use of Dark Matter as a Renewable Energy Source

[19 May 2022] Department of Physics of IPB University held the 29th IPB Physics Talk on 19/5. The 29th webinar presented Reinard Primulando, PhD, a lecturer at Department of Physics, Parahyangan Catholic University with the topic “Dark Matter as a Renewable Energy Source?”
The presentation material by Reinard Primulando, PhD is divided into three main topics, it is the properties of dark matter, the possibilities of dark matter, and motivation to open the new horizons of knowledge.
Reinard explained, dark matter has no effect on life on earth. This dark matter is invisible but its effects can be felt on a galactic scale. Most of the mass inside the galaxy is invisible.

In the universe, he said, the amount of invisible mass is five times that of visible matter. He explained that this invisible mass is known as dark matter.

“This dark matter is neutral (no charge) which means it doesn’t interact with light. In addition, this dark matter must also be stable or not decay and remain in the universe since it was formed until now,” he explained.

He continued, this material is classic and has a de Broglie wavelength that is larger than the size of a galaxy and has a very small mass, it is 10-58 kilograms to 1033 kilograms.
At the end of his presentation, Dr. Reinard explained that dark matter is a mysterious material and so far has not been solved. This topic is still hotly discussed in theoretical physics circles which adds to the treasures of science.

“Although the characteristics of this dark matter are still in the form of possibilities, it does not rule out the possibility that in the future this dark matter can be utilized by humans on earth which can also be used as a source of renewable energy,” he said. (*) (IAAS/DND)
