Overview

Science and technology are two related words. Science studies the phenomena/workings of the universe and its applications while technology studies the applications of science for commercial and industrial purposes. Physics is a branch of science that contributes to the development of technology.

Along with technological developments, FMIPA IPB which was formerly known as the Faculty of Basic Natural Sciences and Mathematics formed the Department of Science in 1950 to strengthen basic scientific disciplines. Based on Undang-Undang No.  2 Tahun 1989 concerning the National Education System, a Physics Study Program was formed and managed by the Department of Geophysics and Meteorology. Furthermore, on October 2, 1996 the Physics Study Program was transferred from the Department of Geophysics and Meteorology to the Department of Physics.

The Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences,  IPB was officially established on September 25, 1997 according to the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 380/DIKTI/Kep/1997 under the name of the Department of Physics. With the existence of PT BHMN IPB, the Department of Physics subsequently changed its name to the Department of Physics in 2004. Along with scientific development, on March 29, 2006, the Department of Physics opened the Biophysics Masters Study Program through IPB Rector’s Decree No. 037/KI3/OT/2006. The Doctoral Program in Physics is recently established in 2022. The Physics S1 Study Program has obtained an A accreditation from BAN-PT since 2011 and has managed to maintain the “A” Accreditation according to BAN-PT Decree No. 5941/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-PPJ/S/VI/2021 (Valid from 03 June 2021 – 03 June 2026). UNGGUL accreditation was successfully achieved on September 1, 2021 in accordance with BAN-PT Decree No. 10593/SK/BAN-PT/AK-ISK/S/IX/2021 and is valid until June 3, 2026. Meanwhile, the Biophysics Masters study program has obtained accreditation A since 2017 with the Decree of BAN-PT No. 1031/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/M/IV/2017. Further examination by BAN-PT in 2021 results in UNGGUL accreditation based on the Decree of BAN-PT No. 10964/SK/BAN-PT/AK-ISK/M/IX/2021.

The Department of Physics has 3 Divisions that function as implementers of scientific development, course services, and management of human resources in accordance with the mandate and scope of science. These three divisions are the Theoretical Physics Division, the Biophysics Section, and the Applied Physics Section. The division is also the door to establishing cooperation with related parties, both in the field of research and community service. These three divisions play an active role and have made a real contribution to the development of physics science at IPB.

The research activities that are quite intense and scientific publications both nationally and internationally produced by the lecturers of the Department of Physics show the real contribution of the Department of Physics to the development of physics science. Other contributions can also be seen in community service activities through the development of simple technology for the community. Cooperation has also been carried out with secondary schools (SMP and SMA) in teaching physics.
