The Form of Community Service, the Physics Department of IPB University Receives a Visit from Class XII Students of SMA Kornita
The Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) IPB University implemented one of the university’s tri dharma: community service. They received visits from 59 class XII Kornita High School (SMA) students and two accompanying teachers.
This activity is a collaboration between IPB University and Kornita High School in carrying out physics learning and practicum at the Teaching Laboratory. The coordinator of the Teaching Lab (Basic Physics for General Competency Education Program/PPKU), Dr. Heriyanto Syafutra, said through this activity, it is hoped that the theory taught in class can be observed and practiced in the laboratory.
The laboratory assistants, Firmansyah S.Si and Alan Jaelani, and six assistants swiftly facilitated the students to do practicum and observe the phenomena.
The material that they learn about is magnetic fields and alternating currents.
“Students are divided into groups, each assisted by an assistant and equipped with worksheets containing information on phenomena that will be observed during the practicum,” he said.
In the first practicum, students are allowed to observe the process of electromagnetic induction and the phenomenon of the emergence of a magnetic field caused by a current-carrying wire. Meanwhile, The students only observed the alternating current experiment in the resistor-capacitor (RC) circuit. From this practicum, students can observe and analyze the properties that affect the voltage on resistors and capacitors.
“Several students revealed that the physics practicum at IPB University was fun and an opportunity to prove the theory obtained in class. In addition, they are happy to be able to recognize and directly use physics practicum tools,” he added.
One of the companion teachers of Kornita High School, Noor Kholifah, S.Pi, M.Si, said that this activity had a positive impact on the students. According to her, this practicum is very helpful for students in understanding and deepening the physics material taught in class.
“We, physics teachers, are very grateful for the physics practicum provided by the Physics Laboratory team of IPB University. They become more understanding in applying the formulas given through hands-on practice using tools,” she said. (IAAS/INT)
