Department of Physics IPB University Holds Science Demo and Strengthening Teacher Competence at SMPN 1 Wonosobo

Present at SMPN 1 Wonosobo, the Department of Physics, IPB University held a Science Demo for Middle School students and Teacher training on Saturday 2 December 2023. Science demo activities for students and training for teachers were carried out in parallel as a part of “Science Camp” training and competitions initiated by the Teacher’s Organization (MGMP) of Junior High School Science teacher of Wonosobo. A total of 27 lecturers and staff from the Department of Physics attended this activity.
Chairman of the MGMP Wonosobo, Hidayat, S.Pd, M.M. in his speech expressed his appreciation for the presence of the IPB Physics Department team to provide training to teachers and students. “We hope that this activity will continue in the following years. Both offline and online.”
“The Department of Physics is grateful for the very good welcome from MGMP IPA and especially SMPN 1 Wonosobo.” Delivered by Prof. Tony Sumaryada, Chair of the IPB Physics Department. He also revealed that universities must always monitor and pay attention to the progress of education in Indonesia, starting from the competence of teachers teaching physics, or junior high school science. “The MoU signed today also supports the continuation of these community service activities in the future.”


The activity, entitled Strengthening Competency in Physics for Middle School Science Teachers in Wonosobo Regency, was warmly welcomed by dozens of middle school science teachers. The material on mechanics, waves, electricity, magnetism and thermodynamics was delivered by lecturers from the Department of Physics who were competent in their fields, namely Prof. Husin Alatas, Prof. Tony Sumaryada, Dr. Agus Kartono, and Drs. Sidikrubadi Pramudito, M.Si. In this short workshop, material was presented to refresh basic knowledge and common misconceptions in physics, especially at junior high school level.
Meanwhile, physics demonstration activities were carried out in the hall of SMPN 1 Wonosobo and were attended by selected junior high school students in the Regency area. Wonosobo. These students are also representatives of their respective schools to compete. There are 4 major science demo topics with 2-3 lecturers working on each topic, namely mechanics, electricity, magnetism, optics, and internet of things (IoT). The equipment used in this demonstration was brought directly from Bogor and succeeded in attracting the attention of junior high school students. Intan, one of the participants, expressed her joy at being able to take part in the science demonstration and was enthusiastic about sharing her experience with her colleagues at her home school.
Not only delivering the material, an MoU was also signed between the Physics Department of IPB and MGMP IPA Kab. Wonosobo is related to sustainable collaboration to improve and strengthen the competency of Wonosobo district science teachers through various activities such as workshops, training and science demonstrations both offline and online. /rfa
