[13th September 2022] Physics Student Association (Himafi), Physics Department of IPB University held a Physics Insight which discussed the latest issues and phenomena of Physics. Physics Insight this time carries the theme “Modern Physics Phenomena: Metaverse from The Point of View of Physics”. The present resource persons were Prof. Husein Alatas and Dr. Erus Rustami, both of whom are IPB University Lecturers.

In his presentation, Prof. Husin Alatas stated that the metaverse is a combination of the digital world and the physical world. Metaverse is widely used to refer to the future evolution of the internet which is expected to provide users with access to virtual reality and augmented reality experiences. “This metaverse is able to change the social fabric of society more than previous technologies,” he said.

He added, the current reality is that there is a huge technological gap or disparity. Even though technology is now included in 5G, there are still many people who are still 2G. “As a result, the development and use of the metaverse in society in general will be difficult to predict. However, many companies are now applying this metaverse for ease of application to the wider community,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Erus Rustami in his presentation emphasized more on virtual reality (VR) device technology that has been widely used today and its advantages and disadvantages. According to him, VR can be applied to various fields such as biomedical, military, gaming, fashion and others. Behind its very capable use, the other side of using VR is that it can have an impact on health if used excessively and can reduce the functionality of body organs.

“Metaverse is a combination or collaboration from various fields. As physicists, we need to know how our position or usefulness is in this field,” he said. (**/Zul) IAAS/ELS
