Background and Description

The Tungku Sekam of the Physics Department of IPB University is a manifestation of the Tridharma of higher education in the field of community service. Because the Physics Department of IPB University initiated the tungku sekam to help the energy security of rural communities from 2008 to 2019. The tungku sekam program to assist the energy security of rural communities aims to provide insight and improve the energy security of rural communities to replace kerosene and gas which are expensive and scarce.

Implementation

In 2008 we conducted training on the manufacture of husk stoves for 25 residents around the IPB campus, socialization and cooking demonstrations at the Dramaga campus of IPB, West Java. In 2009 we conducted socialization and cooking demonstrations in Jampang Surade District, Sukabumi Regency, West Java. In 2010 we conducted socialization and cooking demonstrations in Tangerang Regency, West Java. In 2011 we conducted socialization and cooking demonstrations in Cibatu and Leuwi Goong Districts, Garut Regency, West Java. From 2009 to 2011 we conducted socialization and cooking demonstrations in West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku. In 2012 we conducted a socialization and cooking demo in Situ Ilir Village, Cibungbulang District, Bogor Regency, West Java. In 2012 to 2013 we conducted socialization and cooking demonstrations with the IGTF (IPB Goes To Field) program of LPPM IPB in Klaten Regency, Central Java. In 2014 we conducted socialization and cooking demonstrations with the IGTF (IPB Goes To Field) program of LPPM IPB in Tegal Regency, Central Java. In 2018 we carried out socialization and cooking demonstrations with the thematic KKN PPM program in Sukajaya District, Bogor Regency, West Java. In 2015 to 2019 we do independent service.

Result and Impact

IPB’s tungku sekam can help the energy security of rice-producing rural communities where rice husks are abundantly available which means assisting the government in procuring alternative energy in rural areas.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

In carrying out training and socialization activities for tungku sekam of IPB, the Physics Department experienced various challenges, including limited funds, but the husk stove team of the Department of Physics, FMIPA IPB, continued to carry out independent public services so that IPB’s tungku sekam remains sustainable.

Replicability

It is recommended that training on production tungku sekam, socialization and cooking demonstrations with husk stoves be managed massively and intensively by FMIPA IPB and even LPPM IPB to collaborate with local governments which have abundant rice fields and rice fields and BUMN and private companies with their CSR funds, in order to realize energy security in rural communities throughout Indonesia.
